What scanner for San Diego?

I have a really old AOR 3000A that still works very well.
There is also the Scanner Radio app. that I use.

How much will I benefit from one of the newer Whistler or Uniden products eg. . Trx or 436hp. Would either of these be overkill?

How much unencrypted radio is there still out there and what's the expected life span of expensive scanners like these?

Any of these scanner models will do fine for many 10+ years scanning.

Whistler trx-1 and trx-2 both models are great. Since it does everything including DMR right now and NXDN when it comes available.
Manual programming by hand might be little harder compared to Uniden Scanners.

Uniden BCD436HP and BCD536HP scanners are great scanners. Those models can be upgraded for DMR listening.
Easy to make changes by hand if needed using the buttons on the scanner.

I would wait to buy any other models from Uniden till DMR / NXDN options are made available for them.

You can also stop at the local HRO store in San Diego area and play with the scanners on display. Get your feel for it before buying anything.

Many thanks Brian. Will pop in to HRO and see what they have. Hopefully they will have the TRX units in Stock.

There seems to be two quite polarized camps between Whistler and Uniden.

The free DMR and NXDN updates from Whistler make their offering quite attractive.

I guess that if I'm prepared to forgo NXDN I could also look at the 1088/1098 which should run a bit cheaper.
