Poway Fire Department gets first $1M aerial ladder truck :!:

POWAY -- Officials with the Poway Fire Department are cheering the addition of a vehicle that is expected to enhance the department's ability to combat blazes.

The city's first aerial ladder truck arrived in town last month. Poway firefighters are now learning to drive and operate the $1 million truck, set to be in service by Jan. 1.

the 65-foot-long red and white vehicle will be based at the city's newest fire station at 14322 Pomerado Road.

The new truck features a tractor-trailer design with a rear cab with an extra steering wheel and a 100-foot ladder that can be extended to the fourth floor of a building. A high-pressure water nozzle is mounted on a swivel at the end of the ladder.

The Fire Department had previously relied on the San Diego Fire Department's vehicle to fight such blazes.

Equipment for dealing with floods and water damage, and 212 feet of ground ladders that can be laced up the sides or across the roofs of buildings are also aboard.

The public can see the aerial ladder truck Dec. 5, when it will be on display outside the 7 p.m. council meeting at City Hall.
