ELTs (Emergency Locator Transmitters)

Aircraft ELTs all operate on 121.5 MHz (civilian aircraft emergency) AND 243.0 MHz (military aircraft emergency) with a transmit power of about 50 to 100 milliwatts. 243.0 is the second harmonic of 121.5 so the same transmitter simulcasts on both freqs. (The transmit power on 243.0 is half that of 1...

Expensive

You think you're shelling out a lot for scanners these days, think what your city and county governments are shelling out for Motorola radios these days! :(

ASTREA NiMH

Oh, by the way, ASTREA has been having trouble with the after-market NiMH batteries for the XTS-3000s. They are now switching back to NiCADs.
I don't believe the bugs have been worked out of NiMH technology yet.

NiMH

The NiMH batteries I used were Ray-O-Vac AA's. I built them into a pack for my dual band ham rig. For the first two weeks the radio ran all day AND all night on a full charge. The third week I was lucky to get 3 hours and they never came back to life. The NiCAD AA's I got at Batteries Plus are still...

Lime Green

Most of those lime green brush rigs were built back in the 70's by La Mesa Sheet Metal Works. It's about time they're getting new ones.

CHP antennas

The best antenna for monitoring CHP is a Larsen NMO-40 or NMO-50 base loaded antenna mounted in the vehicle body. That's what "Wolfie" uses. It's only about 40 inches tall. If you use an NMO-30 you can make it even shorter. Ham Radio Outlet has them. A Larsen NMO-150 VHF 5/8 wave antenna w...

Ni Cad / Metal Hydride

Well, I can vouch for Batteries Plus. If you need it they have it. I have found that Ni-Cads are far more reliable than NiMH. The hydrides I've used work just great for about two dozen cycles and then go totally flat. For me that's not very cost effective. Nicads typically run at least 300 to 400 cy...
