I've personally played with working models of the Thales Liberty (prior to the APCO show) and the APX 7000 (at APCO, where it was introduced). Both are nice radios; only the APX will work on the existing SmartNet and SmartZone systems in Southern California (in addition to working on P25 systems).

The Harris radio I saw and held at the show was a non-functional mock-up. It, too, will not be backward compatible.

Despite what some say on the RR forum, Motorola is very much still in the game, developing a new series of radios based on many research sessions with the users of their products. While the radio does not currently cover UHF, I was told that the UHF band-equipped version is in development.

We'll be seeing the APX portable and mobile radios in another Southern California county sometime next year.

San diego county will be getting those?or are they still keeping the XTS radios and if they do get the new ones can you still monitor them with a scanner I should get my GRE PSR500 soon?

800 was talking about Riverside County new system.
Part of the contract for the Motorola system the county required multiband radios from motorola. (Something like that)

I'm sure as time goes on. You will see some command vehicles with those new APX radios in San Diego County area.

Any P25 digital scanners will still work!

Brian is correct.

The RCS is already using P25 - on the existing digital talk groups. The "P25 upgrade" (which appears to be of concern to you) will be gradual, and consists of a conversion from the existing pre-P25 control channel protocol to the P25 control channel protocol and an eventual (sometime next decade) elimination of the analog talk groups.

Riverside County is under contract for a complete new system to replace their EDACS network, and the APX radios are the product Motorola will be supplying.

Go ahead and get whatever scanner when you are comfortable doing so.

tks for the info and I just mentioned the PSR500 is because all the new features and my PRo-96 I have had a long time.
