Be aware also that Uniden provides a perfectly good program to use in programming your 396. Some folks like other programs (not-free) with more features, but for simple programming, the free one Uniden will let you download (once you register on their website) is all you need.

True, but its not that "Noob Friendly". I like the proscan because of the server hosting it allows.

I have a 396 and purchased Butel ARC 396 pro software (Butel software.com). Glad I did as it is easy to use. You can also get a basic version. The pro version is, I believe $69 or so. The basic version, of course.is less. For what it does its very reasonable, in my opinion. It makes it much easier to program the 396. Otherwise, you're going to have some very sore fingers. Just an FYI. Hope this helps. 8)

Happy Scanning

I too am in South O.

For programming I recommend FreeSCAN. It is free and probably the easiest to use.
If you need remote control then go with ProScan.

Radioshack. I hated to say it but they were the first place that popped in my head.

Google BC TOOLS

I think it's something of BCTOOLS.ORG.

It's free, and works very well..

Don't know if it was mentioned prior in this thread, I haven't read back
