Post by El Pablo »

Anybody know what this designator is? I've heard it a few times today.

Thanks.

those are poway units (e51, e52, e53). they've renumbered their units like rancho/northcomm/etc.

Yesterday on NBC7/39, they had a report about Poway Fire and how much money they have and have spent on new rigs, and their own training center. They had video of the new rigs with their new numbering.

Does anyone know how they received the "37" numbering? Is there an unposted list of all of the department's numbers in the county? I know the "North Comm" and CDF/USFS numbering, but lots of numbers are missing. Does each department already have a number but not all use them?

County Numbering System

Post by thefish »

The Poway numbers are part of the countywide numbering system. The first digit is the Zone; in this case 3 for San Diego FD/Central. The second digit is for battalion or department. In this case, the 7 should really be SDFD Battalion 7, but Poway has been 37xx for a long time. The third digit is the type of unit; 1-3? for engines; 6 for brush; 7 for trucks; 9 for rescue. The fourth digit is the number apparatus of that type or station for that battalion or department.

So... 3711 is Zone 3, Poway, engine 1. 3410 would be Zone 3, Battalion 4, Engine 10, etc, etc

It's the same system that the NorthCom units are using, it's just that you don't see the SD Zone numbers used often.

The last list I have of the countywide 4 digit system gives these... note that San Diego DOES have the numbers, they just don't use them in dispatch. I believe they are 33xx units, or were, in this system. You can see the numbers painted on the engines, though, usually.

10xx Deer Springs
11xx Fallbrook
12xx Vista
13xx Escondido
14xx San Marcos
15xx Rainbow
16xx Ramona
17xx Poway (Possibly why they got assigned 37xx as a 'central' ID)
18xx Borrego Springs
19xx Rincon Del Diablo
21xx Oceanside
22xx Carlsbad
23xx Encinitas
24xx Solana Beach
25xx Del Mar
