CDF Press release

Post by fotoguy »

This is what CDF is doing.

The San Diego Unit of the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection is supplementing their Winter Preparedness levels in anticipation of the predicted winds later this week. Normally this time of year all 18 of CDF’s seasonal wildland stations are closed. This year CDF has kept 8 of the 18 wildland stations continuously open because of low fuel moisture levels. The decision to keep these stations open paid off dramatically last Thursday night when strong winds knocked down a power line and a fire erupted outside of Julian. All 8 CDF engines available in San Diego County, 4 Riverside CDF engines and numerous engines form the Forest Service and local government agencies were able to respond immediately and contained the wind driven fire at 3 acres.

Strong, dry winds are predicted over the next few days. Starting today ( Wednesday December 22, 2004) CDF will be supplementing its winter staffing levels with 8 additional inmate hand crews, one air attack plane, two air-tankers, one additional bulldozer and a CDF Helicopter. This increased staffing will remain in place until the fire danger is reduced, hopefully by Sunday.
