Heard on the radio that the snapped KSON tower might be getting rebuilt. Here's what happened to it in '04.

From SDRadio.net
KSON-AM 1240 tower is being rebuilt. The location, near 32nd Street in San Diego, is to replace a damaged self-supporting tower that received significant damage several years ago.

The new tower is on the left to replace the damaged tower, on the right.

Douglas Pierce sent a recent snap shot of the tower. The AM antenna held the ā€œK S O Nā€ call letters on the structure and was a San Diego land mark ā€” for airplane pilots and those on the freeway.

The self-supporting antenna is also the broadcast home for 1040 KURS-AM and a low-powered TV station.

Its all the way up now. Still a little work to be done. I wonder if they are going to paint it for Aircraft?

If the FAA has anything to say about it, and they do, then it will have to be painted and lit. I worked on a project in Kearny Mesa (the Caltrans/CHP ECC) and when they installed their tower, it was not tall enough to require a light, but when the FAA inspected it and saw that it came with a top light, they were required to make it light up.

The tower does have lights on it. They were not on in the daylight (before the collapse) so I guess they still have some work to do.
