stringers?

can someoneone tell me about stringers. i was on another forum and they are talking about stringers and i dont understand what they are talking about. what freq's they use. i am very interested. i searched this website and cant find any info.

Stringers are writers or photographers that write stories or take photos, video or stills for a wide number of publications or television stations. They often take chances that their work will not be needed, but often it is. It is key for the stringer is to get photos or a story that their client is unable to get due to lack of staff or staff being out of position, or being at the right place at the right time. Some are even given assignments the cover events. They use their own gas, camera gear, radios, scanners, pagers to assist them is getting the story. The term "Stringer" is a really old newpaper term. The newspapers paid the writer by the column inch, so after publication the writer would measure the columns with a string to determine how much to bill the paper.
